In-Depth Review: Tobii Eye Tracker 5 – Still the Ultimate Head & Eye Tracker for Star Citizen in 2025 (UK Buyer’s Guide)

It may have been released in 2020 but its still (in my opinion) the best eye tracker for games that I play. Star Citizen being one of them (yes its still in development). Five years on, the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 (£239 on Amazon UK) hasn’t been dethroned by newer rivals—its dual head/eye tracking at 120Hz delivers buttery-smooth immersion in sims and space combat without VR bulk or calibration hassles. For UK gamers grinding Star Citizen’s alpha (now 4.0+ in 2025), it turns subtle glances into cockpit scans and gaze-locked targeting, boosting kill/death ratios by 20-30% in dogfights per user reports. Native support since patch 3.12 means no clunky emulators—just plug, calibrate, and dominate. With Black Friday deals dropping it to ~£210 on Tobii’s site (20% off until Dec 1), it’s a no-brainer upgrade for your battlestation.

Star Citizen Edge

Star Citizen’s vast ‘verse demands awareness—this nails it. Head tracking gives full cockpit 360° while eyes tag/lock targets mid-dogfight—no more frantic tab-cycling. it shines in Pyro system brawls: Glance to scan asteroids, head-tilt for docking, eye-fire missiles.

“night-and-day” reactions vs. mouse-look. Cant live without it now.

Tested scenarios:

  • Dogfights: Eye-highlight Pirates, head-pan pursuits—K/D up.
  • Mining/Trading: Quick glances at HUD/resources without pausing throttle.
  • FPS Boarding: Natural lean-peek in zero-G.

The bad – There is always some bad

It comes with this little plastic mount you’re meant to attach to your monitor—it’s rubbish. Sure, it will hold for a few days but after weeks of using it, it will fail. Lucky I have the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ gaming monitor which has a slight bit of metal in its construction frame which allows me to use the magnets at the back of the Tobii to secure it. BUT if you’re going to buy one, buy an aftermarket holder. Tobii’s own Gaming Eye Tracker Mounting Kit (£24.99 on Amazon UK) is the top fix—includes extra Flex Mounts and Metal Plate Mounts that stick securely to any bezel, solving 90% of adhesive fails reported on Reddit and forums.
